Deport Hanieh Sadat Safavi, daughter of a senior IRGC commander, from Australia
The issue
Reports from independent media and human rights organizations indicate that the Iranian government has been responsible for the violent suppression of peaceful protests, resulting in the deaths of large numbers of protesters within short periods of time. While senior Iranian officials continue to promote hostile rhetoric toward Western countries, many of their family members live safely abroad.
Hanieh Sadat Safavi is one such case. She is publicly reported to be the daughter of a senior commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an organization widely associated with severe human rights violations. She is currently reported to be residing in Australia.
The IRGC plays a central role in the enforcement of policies that have led to widespread repression, including the killing, imprisonment, and mistreatment of Iranian civilians. While families of senior IRGC officials enjoy safety and stability overseas, countless young Iranians continue to suffer and lose their lives inside Iran as a direct result of decisions made by the regime’s leadership.
Australia is a nation founded on the principles of human rights, justice, and the rule of law. Allowing individuals who are publicly linked to senior figures of an oppressive regime to reside in Australia without proper scrutiny raises serious ethical, legal, and security concerns.
We, as concerned members of the global Iranian community and supporters of human rights, call on the Australian government to conduct a thorough, lawful, and transparent review of the residency status of Hanieh Sadat Safavi and similar individuals. This is not a call for discrimination, but a demand for accountability, due diligence, and respect for the values Australia stands for. Australia must not become a safe haven for those connected to regimes responsible for brutal repression and human suffering.
