The Issue

Ehsan Noohi Bezanjani is publicly identified as the son of Kobra Khazali and Ferydoon Nouhi Bezanjani.

Kobra Khazali is a senior Iranian official linked to powerful policymaking bodies that shape state control over women’s lives, bodies, and freedoms. She is a senior figure associated with women-focused policymaking bodies within Iran’s governance structure, including the women’s commission connected to the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution—an institution that plays a central role in shaping Iran’s social and cultural policies.

Ferydoon Nouhi Bezanjani is Ali Khamenei’s trusted physician and the cardiologist on Khamenei’s medical team, is likely known to many. He is the same person who, after the state killing of Mahsa Amini—at a time when Mahsa had already died but was theatrically kept connected to machines so the regime could fabricate an excuse—proposed that her medical file be manipulated and that it be claimed she had been ill since childhood and that her death was inevitable and natural.

Iranian women have endured decades of systemic repression, coercion, and violence under policies designed and enforced by the Islamic Republic. These are not abstract laws. They are lived realities—felt every day through surveillance, intimidation, arrest, and brutality. Yet while women inside Iran pay the price, members of the ruling elite’s families live freely and safely in Western democracies, far removed from the consequences of the system their parents helped build.

Under Iran’s political system, ultimately overseen by Ali Khamenei, women face systematic discrimination and the coercive enforcement of mandatory hijab laws. These policies are not merely symbolic; they are actively enforced through surveillance, arbitrary detention, intimidation, and physical violence. The death of Mahsa Amini, following her arrest by Iran’s morality police, exposed to the world what Iranian women had endured for decades in silence.

Policies That Endanger Women’s Lives
Iran’s 2021 “Family Protection and Youthful Population” law and related pronatalist policies have been widely criticized for restricting reproductive healthcare and bodily autonomy.

Human Rights Watch has warned that these laws undermine women’s rights to sexual and reproductive health and place their health and lives at serious risk by restricting access to contraception, sterilization, prenatal screening, and essential reproductive health information. These policies do not merely reflect so-called “cultural values”; they force families into irreversible medical, ethical, and human-rights crises.

Why This Matters in Democratic Societies
The United States and other democracies should not become safe havens for the close relatives of officials connected to policy structures that enable repression—while Iranian women face punishment, coercion, and denial of essential healthcare.
