The Issue

The Citizens of Alabama are deeply concerned about the ongoing human and civil rights violations within the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). The purpose of this petition is to urge the Department of Justice (DOJ) to intervene immediately and address these egregious violations that have been plaguing our state's prison system for far too long. ADOC has contributed to close to 300 deaths in 2023 alone!

As a resident of Alabama, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact these violations have on individuals who are incarcerated and their loved ones. However, it is essential to recognize that these violations not only affect those behind bars but also reverberate throughout our society as a whole. When basic human rights are violated within our prison system, it deteriorates the very fabric of our community. Family members are serving these sentences alongside their loved ones, not knowing if their non violent offenses will land them a death sentence once they are locked behind those bars.

The ADOC has repeatedly failed to provide adequate security or healthcare services to prisoners, resulting in unnecessary suffering and death. Hundreds of incarcerated individuals have lost their lives in the custody of ADOC despite their conditions being preventable/curable.

Furthermore, overcrowding remains a persistent issue within Alabama prisons. The ADOC operates at more than double its designed capacity, leading to deplorable living conditions that violate fundamental human rights standards set by international conventions such as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules). These unjust arrangements allow hostility to be at an all time high.

The lack of mental health and rehabilitative resources available in prisons exacerbates an already dire situation. Inadequate staffing levels and limited access to mental health professionals contribute significantly to high rates of self-harm, suicide, and homicide among incarcerated individuals.

The lack of proper nutrition and absence of appropriate medications and basic medical care is inexcusable and comparable to the Nazi concentration camps. where are our tax payer dollars going?

These alarming facts underscore why immediate action from the DOJ is necessary. By intervening in Alabama's prison system, we can ensure that basic human rights are respected and protected for all individuals under state custody.

It is crucial for us as citizens not only to demand justice but also to hold our government accountable for its failures. By signing this petition, we call upon the Department of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation into the human and civil rights violations within the Alabama Department of Corrections. We urge you to take swift action to rectify these injustices and implement necessary reforms that will bring about lasting change.

Together, let us stand up for justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity. Sign this petition today and join us in demanding that the Department of Justice intervenes on Alabama's prison human rights violations IMMEDIATELY. We can not wait until 2024!
