End Street Harassment : An Enactment to Catcalling
The Issue
Amidst all the noise around a busy city, women are subject to catcalls, wolf whistles, and all other forms of behavior considered street harassment. Street harassment which consists of offensive comments, whistling, catcalling, and other acts of strangers in public places may cause the victim to be unobtrusive . Simply put, street harassment promotes fear, and gives women another reason to be dumbfounded in their rights.
According to the Social Weather Station, 88 percent of women aged 18 to 24 suffer from this type of harassment or profanity. It covers 50 percent of women who do not take action afterwards, and 20 percent who do not react due to fear. Women viewed themselves as representative of their body, body parts and sexual function. They felt more aware and ashamed about their body parts because they felt anxious about how strangers evaluated them. As a result, women's mental state is affected. On the other hand, this type of public or street harassment is associated with body image, avoidance; behavior and more importantly self-confidence that have an emotional impact on the woman experiencing catcalling.
The petition aims to raise awareness and to call out to those who are seated, the Department of Justice who has the power to change this system. Quezon City, in Mayor Herbert Bautista's lead has made this possible who signed, penalizing street-level harassment to women. Why don't we take a huge step and apply it to the whole?
Women of all ages are worthy of respect. Never use the victim's way of clothing a reason to objectify her rights. Let us give women the ease and peace of mind to walk on murky streets without the fear of being harassed by anybody. Let us be reminded that catcalling is not a compliment to be grateful for, it is harassment.
Women did not exist for men's viewing pleasure.
