Ilitha Labantu as an organization that has advocates for the rights of women & children for over 31 years we are met with great sadness and anguish over the murder of 36 year old Sibongiseni Gabada from Khayelitsha. Sibongiseni had gone missing for weeks until her decomposing body was discovered stuffed in a bag on the 29th of May 2020. The case against her boyfriend who was in custody for allegedly being linked to her death has been dropped due to inconclusive evidence in spite of the fact that he confessed that he discovered her lifeless body and proceeded to put her body in bag and placed it behind his shack for no one to see until the body was discovered by neighbors 2 weeks later.

We appeal to the justice system to play a greater role in the prosecution of perpetrators of violence against women because far too often our justice system has failed our women. This particular case like many cases involving women from the townships and poor communities has received little to no attention considering the seriousness of the crime committed. We strongly believe that the complete withdrawal of all charges against the accused is hasty and unsympathetic and that other legal avenues could have been utilized to build a stronger case and bring justice for Sibongiseni.

We call upon people from all works of life to sign our petition to help ensure that Sibongiseni's family finds the closure they need, violence against women and children is a human rights issue that concerns us all irrespective of race, class, religion or background, we can all play our role to put an end to this injustice and put the perpetrators behind bars.

Please sign the petition to reinstate all charges against the accused so that justice can be served.
