Increased Pay for Health Workers During the Pandemic

The Issue

This petition has two (2) purposes with the first being to grant additional salary to the front liners in the hospitals including all positions (e.g. doctors, nurses, medical technologists, sanitary staff, etc.), Their original salaries should at least be doubled. For example, nurses should earn at least P80,000 per month compared to today’s P40,000 per month while med techs should earn at least P60,000 per month compared to their P30,000 per month.

The second purpose is to give additional benefits for the health workers such as free healthcare for them and their family, insurance for all primary family members, attendance bonus, free transportation to work, and many more. Additional benefits will at least make up for the low salaries of our health workers. Nurses in the Philippines are heavily underpaid. The Department of Labor and Employment claims that salaries abroad are significantly higher than here in the Philippines (Limpot, 2020). Even before the emergence of COVID-19, the country’s nurses and medical workers are already underpaid. One News (2020) reported that Filipino nurses are the lowest paid nurses in the Southeast Asian region with an average of P40,381/month, which is 57% lower than Vietnamese nurses, compared to Singapore’s average of P236,000/month. That’s just for the nurses because medical technologists have a different story. A Filipino medical technologist averagely earns about P29,444/month which is very low compared to Vietnam’s P57,000/month and Singapore’s P236,000 (One News, 2020).

That was just in the Southeast Asian region. What more in the United States and in Europe? Wood (2020) asks that shouldn’t we pay them well if we can’t even equip them properly? Hazard Pay is a way to show support to health-care workers and front liners in this pandemic like how we support the army at war (Wood, 2020).

Meeting these recommendations will keep our health workers motivated. Increased salary and additional benefits will act as an Extrinsic Motivation for health workers. They have worked hard and tirelessly for an unbelievable number of hours, risking their lives every day. They deserve so much and they deserve an increase. This will also keep them motivated in doing excellent service to the people.
