Most frontline NHS and Social Care staff are on minimum wage, our priorities are wrong!!

The Issue

Everyone on the frontline in the NHS and Social Care is placing their lives and the lives of their families in danger. A lot of them are on minimum wage or a little over. Some can't go home for danger of spreading the coronavirus to their families. There is no end in sight, we are just in the beginning of this in the UK.

They see their friends and neighbours sat at home enjoying their free time and a safe environment on 80% of their existing wages. In many cases this 80% is more than their 100%. Why don't we value these frontline workers more. They are motivated by the desire to care for the weak and vulnerable. This sentiment should be rewarded by more than just a clap. Let's give them a fair wage for the danger they are placing themselves in.

Most social care staff work at the national living minimum wage of £8.21. NHS staff will be on a similar starting level with the more qualified getting more. Cleaners will also be on the NLW. We should at least be paying them double time, if not more.

These are unprecedented times, when these essential workers signed up for caring, they weren't signing up to work with such an infectious disease. They lack the PPE, there colleagues are falling away, scared and confused, and without testing, their number are reducing. Yet they aren't even asking for more money, more the reason why we should all step up.
