Reforestation of Sierra Madre

Reforestation of Sierra Madre
The Issue
INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEM
Tree logging is very common nowadays. We obtain lots of our goods from trees such as wood products, papers, and etc. The problem with tree logging is that they don’t replace or plant a tree in replacement of the tree they chopped down. In the Philippines, Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range. Most part of Sierra Madre is nearly bald due to illegal logging.
STATISTICS
Year Confiscated Wood (cu. M) % estimated illegal wood
2003 190 1.5-3.0
2004 129 0.7-1.1
2005 219 0.8-1.3
2006 478 1.7-2.6
2007 67 0.2-0.3
2008 1212 3-5
2009 2883 23-47
CONSEQUENCES
· Areas near Sierra Madre is prone to landslide
· Lack of trees can lead to flooding of places near Sierra Madre
· Many animals don’t have a placed to live in
· Increased of greenhouse gases
· Climate change
· Higher amount of Carbon Dioxide and lesser Oxygen
MERITS/BENEFITS
· Helps avoid landslide due to soil erosion
· Helps avoid flooding
· Produce more oxygen
· Avoid climate change
PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW
This is an example of a Deep Ecology wherein there is a relationship among living organisms and every living thing is dependent on each other for survival. Without trees, there is no oxygen to for us humans to breath. Trees also help avoid climate changes which affects the environment we live in and such as ourselves.
SOLUTION
In order to return the trees in the Sierra Madre the officials or more specifically the Department of Environment and Natural Resources must first put a stop to those who illegally log trees. They must also spread awareness for the consequences of lacking of trees. They must also have a campaign which can help plant more trees to replace those that were chopped.
CLOSING STATEMENT
Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. But due to tree logging and illegal logging most parts of it is bald. In order to avoid consequences such as landslide, flooding increase greenhouse gases, climate change, and etc. the Department of Environment and Natural Resources must solve the issues involve to deforestation. Illegal logging must be put to stop, more trees must be planted than chopped, and they must spread awareness to the publicity for the consequences we are facing.
