Over the course of the pandemic, the rehabilitation for Manila bay continuously transpires, wherein large-scale funds had been dispensed in this project of the current administration. Numerous citizens were captivated by the enthralling beauty that dolomite sand yielded to the reclamation area. However, it is relatively fruitless considering that sands are carried on the coast and shipped from other regions. In turn, it becomes an environmental concern to the masses because islands in other provinces are constantly aching and damaged with the importation of dolomite in the urban area.

As the phases of development continue, Alter-Eco aims to create a movement through its campaign by providing profound understanding regarding the beautification program of the government alongside its adverse effects, not only on the environment but on the masses, due to its unreasonable cost. We advocate for a sustainable solution through the utilization of mangroves along the shoreline of the bay since this approach fosters long-term environmental action.

With the usage of dolomite sand, we have sensed that it is undeniably impractical, owing to the fact that it cost an estimated budget of 389 million, excluding other phases of development in the succeeding years. Alongside this, it propels detrimental effects on the health of humans and the stability of the environment. As mentioned by scientists and experts, dolomite sand has crystalline silica that can damage the lungs and result in cancer when dust particles are inhaled because it encroaches the respiratory system (Abad, 2020). In addition, as the people have been exposed for a prolonged period of time to an area surrounded by such sands, it can perpetuate shortness of breath and discomfort in the chest because there is a strong proclivity that components of dolomite can be carried by the wind, increasing physical contact to human beings.

In contrast to the above-mentioned drawbacks, mangroves generate numerous benefits, not only to the face of the environment but to the existence of diversified species. According to Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) Director Henry Adornado, planting mangroves can alleviate the continuous struggle against air pollution since it has plant characteristics that can absorb carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere, particularly by the proliferating demands in the transportation system. On top of this, it can increase the reproduction of aquatic and bird species because it serves as a natural habitat, providing nutrient-rich breeding grounds for myriad organisms. Moreover, it is cost-efficient because the current market price of crushed dolomite sand approximates P469.50 per metric ton, while ready-to-plant mangroves range from P40 to P50, which is undeniably practical considering the economic condition of the country amid a global health crisis.

As we encapsulate all the presented ideas, this campaign strives to enlighten the masses that dolomite sand can induce the emergence of undesirable consequences. Hence, this online petition advocate for a nature-based solution that can transcend the betterment of the environment, not merely for beauty but the welfare of humanity.
