For millennia, humanity has been hard workers, look at the pyramids, cities, infrastructure of the world and many scientific advances made even just in the past century, however, it’s coded into our DNA to take a break and rest for a while. The average schedule of a high school student today is: School, homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, repeat. It takes no downtime into account, and because of this, as schoolwork has become more and more difficult, and a change from school officials is far overdue.

The schooling system currently in place in the USA doesn’t always take this into account. Teachers have started to assign more and more busy-work, meant solely to get more total points for the year, or so teachers can say their class is difficult. In reality this kind of pointless work has no benefit to the student, and is therefore unnecessary. It starves them of the "many important mental processes [that] seem to require what we call downtime and other forms of rest during the day." An important part of the human brain is downtime, time when you’re not actively creating lasting memories or trying to practice a new skill. The brain requires this time in order to create pathways in the brain that contain these memories and skills, and to strengthen them.

Not only does too much homework not benefit the student, but in many cases it actually has a detrimental effect and creates a pool of anxiety and depression among high-schoolers. It easily leads to many students taking desperate measures just to keep their grades from dropping, and to practice attitudes commonly accepted to be dangerous to the student, such as lack of sleep, drinking, drugs, and in many cases self harm. In 2015 alone, over 3 million students reported a serious depression episode. "30% of girls and 20% of boys, totaling 6.3 million teens", report some sort of anxiety disorder, something that is so commonplace that we joke about it in school, and people are assumed to have at this point.

This, and many more reasons, are why students and parents alike, must band together and demand a change in our schooling system, only an hour and a half total is recommended for high school students per night, while many are doing much more than that, so sign this petition to hopefully create an impact on the Education Board of the USA and create a brighter future, and present, for the youth of the US.
