CHANGE THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM FOR AUSTRALIAN KIDS!!

The issue

Problem
The Australian Education system has not changed for over 100 years. Instead of children improving, they have been falling behind and slacking off. Most of the Australian students do NOT enjoy school because it doesn’t allow them to express themselves and they never understand what their “learning”.

Australian children also deal with a unbelievable amount of stress from assignments and exams. They have been forced to believe that test scores are the most important. When my friends fail an exam, they always tell me their going to be in great trouble. This is again because our last generation was taught the same.

Technology has come a long way from the 1900’s, and yet school hasnt. Why is that? In school, we use textbooks, write with pen and paper and can not talk unless we raise our hand. Some of the highest paying jobs involve computering. During school however, we dont use computers.

I remember once I raised my hand because I didn’t understand the ‘similarities between triangles’. My teacher said “How can you not understand when everyone else can?” The truth is, not everyone works the same way. We have different strengths and weaknesses. There are 3 different ways to learn. Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. Each child has their own preference on how they learn, however, they are forced to learn the same way. Then they are questioned why they do not understand the information. Is this fair?

There once was a boy who captured some crickets and put them into a big jar. The crickets had their main necessities and they boy crewed the lid on punching holes into it so they could breathe. For days the crickets tried to escape. Jumping to the lid only to rebound and come straight back down. This behaviour suddenly came to a stop and the crickets adjusted to their new home. The boy took the lid off and the crickets didn’t notice. The boy wanted to know what would happened and left the lid off. The crickets never escaped. They had tried and gotten beat down so they were programmed to believe they could never escape. This is alot like school. We all have amazing creativity, but were only taught certain things. Never are we taught how that creativity can be used.

Most schools start around 8 o’clock in the morning. The brain doesnt completely wake up until around 10 o’clock. Everything we learn in the morning goes into one ear and out the other. Whats the point of that? Some kids have a hard time getting to sleep and most have to wake up at 6 am every morning. High schoolers fall asleep in class all the time. Then they get a detention for it. And no matter their excuse (whether its a good excuse or not) the teacher always replies with “well thats your fault.”

Students are going through TORTURE. The worst part is, half of what they learn isnt useful. They dont learn how to make resumes, to set up credit/debit cards, how to handle taxes, financial planning, how to buy a house etc. We learn everything except the most important things.

Solution
Nevertheless, every problem has a solution. There are many for this cause.

For each grade, we could assign their classes based on how they learn. There would be 3 base groups, (visual, auditory and kinesthectic) then into 2 other groups, (collaboration or independent) this would make each class easier. The classes would be a bit smaller which means they wouldnt always talk over eachother and thus wont have to always raise their hand. It has also been scientifically proven that mixed classes distract both genders. I went to a school that decided to divide most of the classes into “boys” and “girls” classes. I enjoyed the girls only classes alot more then mixed. Boys always seemed to be loud and distracting. Yet when it was boys only, they were quite content.

MORE TECHNOLOGY! Another school im currently at uses technology fir a wide amount of classes. They have virtual classes so everyone can keep track of where everyone else is up to. Also, if someone misses a day, they can stay on track via the virtual classroom.

Days start later. As in one of my previous arguments, the average brain doesnt wake up until nearly halfway through the day. If we started after everyone had time to wake up properly, students will improve greatly.

Thank you.
