As of 2020, the student loan debt in the U.S has reached $1.7 trillion dollars. I own $46k of that debt. This debt impacted my home buying power, my ability to save for retirement and often impacted my choices between satisfying basic needs or my student loan company. Student loan debt is crippling Americans and impacting finances and access to aspects of the “American Dream”. Frequently, working class Americans are bearing the brunt of this debt. Many Americans are unable to afford the payments due to employers paying less than half of the average Americans’ debt. Post Covid, student loans will only deepen this hole and could cripple the economy further.
