As of now January 2020 there is still no eligibility or access to extracurricular activities such as; sports, band, and choir for Virtual Charter School Students (Online Public School Students). These students should have the right and ability to join and try out for such activities without having to enroll in their local district, surrounding districts or residential school. They should not be singled out for their choice to receive an individualized education.

Virtual Charter School Students are typically enrolled in an "Online Accredited Public School" which means they are attending a "Public School" at home. Public School at home offers so many benefits to students who have difficulties in large classroom settings, have problems with bullying, behavioral disabilities or just need a better, quieter, and less distracting learning environment. It also provides an individually tailored curriculum and allows for more one-on-one support from the student's teachers.

  • Laws and regulations prevent virtual school students from participating in all extracurricular activities such as; sports, band, and choir, that are not provided by Charter or Online Public Schools.
  • This needs to change!! Online Public School Students should have the ability to play sports, join band and choir for their local residential schools, district and surrounding districts WITHOUT the need for enrollment even, if that means parents may be required to pay an up front fee to ofset costs accrued by the student participating. Being enrolled in a Virtual Charter School/Online Public School  shouldn't prevent students from participating in extracurricular activities, they should be allowed the same rights and chances as children in traditional public schools!

Children with access to extracurricular activities are found to perform better academically. They are able to explore a range of interests and unlock passions they never knew they had. Children learn new skills that include (but are not limited to):

  • Goal setting, Teamwork, Time management, Better organizational skills, Prioritisation, Problem solving, Analytical thinking, Leadership, and Public speaking, Children tend to have improved self-confidence and are able to meet new people and improve social skills.

More importantly extracurricular activities and leadership account for for about 30% of a student's college or university application!

While most virtual charter schools offer access to online clubs and participation in social events, the ability to be a part of a team in a sport, band or choir is still not available to these students especially in small town or smaller city areas.

I, personally, have children that learn better, achieve better grades and have less self-esteem issues due to bullying because they attend an Online Public School. Their curriculum and classes are individually tailored just for them and their ability to have more one-on-one time with their teachers makes it easier for them to get help when they may not understand a certain assignment. However, before we chose to go to an Online Public School one of our children were enrolled in our local school and was involved in sports and choir, which now she cannot be a part of. This needs to change! They are still getting a public school accredited education. They should have the same rights to be a part of sports and extracurricular activities as traditionally schooled children.  Please help me to fight for change in the laws and regulations in regards to this matter!!! Thank you!!
