Deny Permits for American Towers LLC Data Center and Implement a Temporary Moratorium
The Issue
To:
- The City Council and Community Development Department of Pinellas Park, FL
- The Board of County Commissioners of Pinellas County, FL
- Forward Pinellas (Countywide Planning Authority)
We the undersigned residents, homeowners and stakeholders of Pinellas County, formally petition the city of Pinellas Park and Pinellas County to deny the site work and building permits filed by American Towers LLC for proposed 4MW Edge Data Center at 10700 76th Ct, North. We urge officials to place an immediate moratorium on data center developments until proper land use definitions and regulatory guardrails are established.
We object to this development based on the following critical issues:
- Severe Jurisdictional Confusion & Lack of TransparencyThere is a clear geographic and regulatory discrepancy regarding this site. Th Pinellas County Property Appraiser lists the parcel under the jurisdiction of Pinellas Park while the Tax authority and postal records list is a Seminole (Largo mailing area). This creates a severe gap in public notice, meaning affected residents in neighboring tax districts and municipal boundaries are not being properly informed about an industrial development happening less than a quarter mile from their homes.
- Absence of Countywide Land Use RegulationsAs stated by Forward Pinellas, data centers are an entirely new type of land use with no current definition use characteristics or impact metrics in the Pinellas County Wide Plan. It is irresponsible to grant conditional use permits for an experimental, high-impact industrial facility before the court has even drafter the zoning rules to regulate it.
- Strained Utilities and Natural Resource ConcernsData centers are notoriously resource-intensive consuming millions of gallons of water for cooling infrastructure and placing massive demands on the local electrical grid. Pinellas County cannot afford to compromise its potable water capacity or risk grid instability for a project built on a small half acre footprint.
- Environmental and Quality of Life DegradationThe site layout includes four massive, industrial grade backup diesel generator pads. Theses generators create substantial noise pollution, vibration and toxic diesel exhaust emissions directly adjacent to residential neighborhoods, violation the quiet enjoyment and safety of nearby families
Our Actionable Demands:
- To Pinellas Park: Deny the pending civil, landscape and structural permits for American Towers LLC at 10700 76th Court N, Pinellas Park, (Seminole) FL
- To Pinellas County & Forward Pinellas: Enact an immediate temporary moratorium on ALL data center applications similar to pauses, enacted by other Florida communities, until comprehensive environmental, water and noise studies are integrated into the Countywide Plan.
