Deny Parole for Convicted Vehicular Manslaughter Offender, Jessica Novak

The Issue

On January 19th, 2021, Jeanette Helms was tragically killed in a vehicular manslaughter incident caused by Jessica Novak, DIN# 22G0347. This was not her first offense as she has a prior conviction of DUI.

The day she killed Jeanette, Jessica had total disregard for law enforcement in her efforts to evade apprehension. Traveling at a speed of over 100 mph, she hit Jeanette Helms head on as she was waiting at a red light very close to her home. This time, her reckless actions resulted in the death of a wife, mother, grandmother and cherished friend. The grief is immeasurable and unending.

We are friends of David Helms - Jeanette's husband who has been living with the devastating emotional impact of this senseless act for the past three years.

We have witnessed his struggle to cope with the loss of his wife due to someone else's reckless disregard for life.

Jessica Novak is now up for parole consideration. We believe that granting her parole would be an injustice to Jeanette's memory, an affront to all those still mourning her loss as well as a risk to the safety of the public.

According to data from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), recidivism rates among offenders like Novak are high. It is crucial that we prioritize public safety over leniency for repeat offenders.

We urge you to consider our plea as we petition the Office of Parole in New York State not only on behalf of The  Helms Family, but also on behalf of everyone who knew and loved Jeanette Helms.

Please deny parole for Jessica Novak.
