On March 24th, 2019,  the life of Elijah Baker was tragically cut short. Our community was rocked by the senseless loss of a young person who had so much to give to the world. Today, we stand united in our grief and in our resolve to ensure that justice is served. It is why we are calling on authorities to deny executive clemency to Tariq Beane, the individual responsible for this heart-wrenching crime.

Why does justice matter in this case? The answer is simple: accountability. Elijah's life cannot be restored, but we must uphold the integrity of our legal system and send a clear message that acts of violence and disregard for human life will not be tolerated. Clemency, in this case, would diminish the severity of Elijah's loss and set a dangerous precedent that could jeopardize the safety of other innocent lives in our community.

Statistics show that leniency in serious violent crimes often fails to deter future occurrences and may even embolden potential offenders. According to studies, proper enforcement of penalties for severe crimes can lead to lasting reductions in crime rates, fostering a safer environment for us all. This is not just about Elijah; it's about protecting future generations from facing similar tragedies.

Moreover, granting clemency could tear open the wounds of the bereaved Baker family, who deserve closure and assurance that the justice system honors their loss. They, alongside our community, need to hold the offender accountable for his actions.

In light of these considerations, we urge Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia to reject any appeals for clemency for Tariq Beane. Let us stand together in our pursuit of justice for Elijah Baker and affirm our commitment to safeguarding our community.

Elijah was everything to his family.  We struggled every day with this loss. Elijah was an amazing son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend and he would have been an amazing uncle if he had that chance. Every day I see the kids he had grown up with as well as his brothers live the life they were intended to live and it’s a constant realization that my baby didn’t get that chance. Elijah touched many peoples lives in the short time he was here and we are so proud of him for that and it’s truly heartfelt to hear all the stories. Elijah did not deserve this so please take the time to stand strong for Elijah!  The justice system failed Elijah when his murder only got 30 years please help keep him in prison seven years is an insult.
