Denver Residents Opposed to Commercial Drone operations at Walmart
The Issue
We are a community deeply invested in preserving the integrity and quality of our neighborhoods. The proposed amendment to the conditional zoning plan would allow drone loading, takeoff, landing, and storage operations at Walmart located at 7131 NC 73 Hwy (Zoning Number CZ #2026-2). While technological advancement is important, it should not come at the cost of our privacy, safety, and the peacefulness of our residential community.
Our primary concern is the potential invasion of privacy. The introduction of drone operations means increased surveillance capabilities, putting our private lives under unwanted scrutiny. The thought of drones hovering over our homes with cameras raises alarms about the erosion of our privacy rights. The proposed drones have FOUR cameras on the underside that constantly record video and send it back to Wings team in California to be analyzed.
Additionally, there are significant safety and environmental concerns related to drone operations. The risk factors include technical malfunctions, collisions, and the potential for accidents that can endanger wildlife and residents, especially children who play outdoors. The impact on public safety cannot be underestimated, and the current zoning amendment does not provide sufficient measures to allay these fears. I asked about bird strikes at the initial community meeting and the Wing drone representative confirmed that birds have been hit.
Noise pollution is another pressing issue. Drones generate substantial noise, which disrupts the tranquility of our neighborhoods. Maintaining a peaceful and quiet environment is crucial for our community's quality of life. Further study on the impact of the constant drone noise in high density areas needs to be understood before installation.
The proposal is also incompatible with the surrounding residential neighborhoods. Introducing industrial drone activities in a primarily residential area is inappropriate and will alter the character and charm of our community. This incompatibility with existing land-use plans should be a significant consideration for decision-makers.
Moreover, the lack of transparency in formulating this proposal and the unclear enforcement measures for drone operations raise red flags. We demand transparency and participation in the decision-making process, ensuring our concerns are heard and addressed.
We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider and reject the proposed zoning amendment. We seek a transparent, inclusive dialogue that respects the needs and values of our community. Please show your support by signing this petition to oppose drone operations at the Walmart in our community.
There will be a meeting on June 1st, 2026, in the County Administration building for this change. If able, please show up in opposition!
