Get Bill Vinovich fired!
Get Bill Vinovich fired!
The Issue
If you watched the Denver Broncos play the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 divisional round of the NFL playoffs, you might have observed some atrocious officiating. If you didn't, you weren't paying much attention.
This head referee has no business leading an officiating crew in an NFL game, let alone being any part of an NFL crew responsible for officiating a game.
I will give a specific example from each game (though there were many to choose from in all four games Vinovich took part in, since Peyton Manning became a Bronco):
2012 playoff game; where Eric Decker is getting mauled by the defender (defender is holding Decker's left arm completely, and defender's right arm is already wrapped around Decker - both arms easy to see are defining "pass interference"), the ball arrives and with only one arm to try to catch it, Decker misses, the ball bounces into a Ravens player's hands and is returned for a Touchdown (aka "pick-six). This was on a drive where the Broncos were sure to score at least a field goal. So in the best light, that was a ten point swing.
December 22, 2014 @ Cincinnati; Demaryius Thomas is also being interfered with, but makes an astounding catch which would have basically guaranteed (at least) a Broncos field goal. Wait though: We have a flag for a facemask on Demaryius Thomas. In the replay you can certainly see his hand brush by the defender's face, but the defender's interference was much more impacting on the play, and Demaryius still caught the ball. Worst case scenario aka objectively - if anything, those should have been offsetting penalties.
If you actually take the time to look at how lopsided the officiating is, when this man "officiates" a Broncos game, it is easy to see how biased he is. It also shouldn't happen, if he had any common sense, but you can see when he has to make a call against the opposing team (the team that isn't the Broncos), it looks like it pains him. It is almost a certainty that for some reason, he hates the Broncos. But for one thing, he shouldn't let it show - but more importantly, he's being paid to be objective and has failed miserably at that. This man should not be allowed to officiate in the NFL ever again. Once someone makes it this clear that they are willing to compromise the integrity of the game, they should be banned for life. Let's make an example for the rest of the future officials that this kind of "officiating" won't stand!
