Keep Navo Kids Safer

The Issue

Today we had our first incident since DISD stopped bus service from Savannah to Navo Middle School. A young girl was hit by a truck while crossing a crosswalk on her bike. Yes, we can point fingers at the driver, at the child, at anyone else, but at this point, after all of our emails, calls, and voicing of concerns about losing our bus routes, I believe we should hold DISD responsible. We need to make the entire leg of the drive from 1385 down Fishtrap and up through Union Park a designated and monitored school zone. If DISD Transportation cannot provide the buses and drivers to support our community, we need to come together to request that they at least make the area travelled by our pre-teens and barely-teens a safer route. We are still waiting for confirmation of the girl's condition, but those of us driving by with kids in the car were all devastated and disappointed. Some because we couldn't stop and help, all because we knew in our hearts this was going to happen at some point without bus service. We are all lucky to live in such a wonderful community and that the good samaritan that stopped was ex-military and trained for emergency situations. Please sign this petition so we can request that, at the least, we make our streets school zones with lower speed limits and regular police presence.
