As a concerned resident of Etowah, TN, I am writing this petition to address a pressing issue that poses a threat to the safety and well-being of our community. The abandoned building located on 517 Athens Pike, here in Etowah, has become a significant concern for all residents in the neighborhood.

This petition is personal to me because I live across the street from this building, and have witnessed firsthand the deteriorating state of this building and its negative impact on our community. Not only does it present an eyesore, but it also attracts criminal activities such as vandalism, drug use, and squatting. The presence of this abandoned structure not only diminishes property values but also jeopardizes the safety and security of our families.

The most obviously risky elements of abandoned buildings are likely the walls, floors, and ceilings–in essence, the basic structural components of the building. Depending on the age and condition of the building, the risk for disaster may vary. Abandoned buildings quickly succumb to the environment and can deteriorate fast. 

Furthermore, studies conducted by reputable organizations have shown that abandoned buildings can become breeding grounds for vermin infestations such as rats and insects. This poses serious health risks for nearby residents as these pests can carry diseases into our homes. It is crucial that we take immediate action to prevent further harm or potential tragedies from occurring within our neighborhood.

By demolishing this vacant building promptly, we can eliminate these hazards while revitalizing our community's appearance and overall quality of life. We believe that removing this blight will not only enhance property values but also attract new businesses and investments into Etowah.

We call upon local authorities including Mayor Garwood, City Council members, and relevant departments responsible for urban development to prioritize the demolition process urgently. We request your support in allocating necessary funds or seeking grants specifically designated for addressing blighted structures within our town.
