The Issue

My son, among other kids I know, are directly affected by the misleading and inappropriate content that is continuously being uploaded on YouTube and YouTube Kids. Videos that are intended for children and should be providing safe and educational entertainment have instead become a source of disturbing material that can potentially harm young minds. It is horrifying to see the sheer number of these inappropriate videos, often featuring violent, scary, or otherwise unsuitable themes, being slipped into playlists or recommended to children.

YouTube, being one of the largest content-sharing platforms globally, holds a responsibility to ensure the safety and appropriateness of content made accessible to children. However, with the current system, these harmful videos continue to evade YouTube’s content filtering measures and amass significant viewership numbers, further encouraged by YouTube’s monetization strategy. This strategy, unfortunately, rewards the creators of such inappropriate content, while compromising the well-being of our children.

According to a report by Common Sense Media, over 80% of children aged 8-12 watch YouTube regularly, making this issue all the more pressing. It is crucial to take immediate action to stop YouTube from profiting off the dissemination of harmful children's content. This requires not only stricter content moderation policies but also an overhaul of the existing monetization rules that inadvertently incentivize creators to produce shocking material for profit.

Google, as the parent company of YouTube, must invest in more advanced moderation technologies and human oversight mechanisms to efficiently and effectively identify and remove content that is not suitable for young viewers. Additionally, transparent guidelines should be enforced for content creators, making explicit what is acceptable and what is not when producing content for children.

Our collective goal is to ensure that all content accessible to children on YouTube and YouTube Kids is both safe and beneficial. It's time to prioritize our children's mental and emotional well-being over profits. Stand with me in urging YouTube to take comprehensive measures towards creating a safer online environment for children worldwide.
