The Issue

Family vlogging is a serious issue on YouTube. While these channels may seem innocent, they are notorious for being dangerous. We, both the youth and adults, can mainly agree that it can be dangerous, and damaging in the long-term.

There is little to no laws whatsoever to regulate these channels.

When children use TV, the internet, social media, or video games, parents and schools supervise and closely regulate them to stop addiction, keep it G/PG, and keep them safer. However, there is no child labor restrictions for family vlogs—children are completely allowed unsupervised. This can infringe with education, because they are never taught to set limits and boundaries. They will suffer when getting jobs or going to college.

On TV and film, there are child labor laws that allow kids to be in movies, but have child labor laws.

There are movies featuring children, such as The Goonies, Home Alone, and The Karate Kid. But why do the child labor laws apply? It's to keep them safe and prevent being exploited. It's also to prevent interference with education and important responsibilities.

Not to mention, there are parents who make parenting on YouTube, but never show their kids faces, Why? It's easy—They don't know if they want to be posted or not! It's for good reasons.

We demand, that YouTube, introduce strict regulations and policies against family vlogging, to prevent child exploitation.

We suggest that YouTube:

  1. Terminate family vlogging channels made without child's consent (Or at the very least, implement the same child labor laws as in TV and film.)
  2. Penalize or warn parents who post their children without consent or when they no longer want to be on the channel.
  3. Allow children to be posted online only if parents receive the child's consent to create a channel, but with hard policies in place to keep them safe.
  4. Ensure that parents and children are educated about digital literacy, parental guidance, and online safety practices when making a channel posting the faces of children online to cultivate a safer online environment and community for the channel.
  5. Strictly terminate predators who target children on-video online.

By implementing child labor laws on YouTube, we can help to keep children safe on social media and the Internet as a whole, and promote digital literacy. The Internet has the potential to be a fun and educational place for children if supervised, but family vlogging is on the dark side of the Internet. Sign this petition, and join today if you care about child safety! Also, try sharing as much as possible to hopefully make this petition successful.

Not to mention, many states/countries are doing online child labor laws, why not do the same for YouTube themselves?
