Demand Watertown Rep. John Lawn Resign After Drunk Driving Arrest
The Issue
On July 16, Massachusetts State Representative John Lawn was arrested in Boston after allegedly driving drunk through Beacon Hill near the State House. Witnesses reported he struck a parked truck, ran multiple stop signs, and was so impaired that he had to hold himself up on a fence and street sign during a sobriety test. Body camera footage released by Boston Police shows Lawn visibly struggling to stand, slurring his words, and refusing a breathalyzer test.
This is not just a personal mistake — it is a serious breach of public trust. Lawn represents Watertown, Waltham, and Newton, and currently serves as chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing. His role gives him influence over health care policy in Massachusetts, even as he faces probation for operating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, and losing his driver’s license for 45 days. He admitted in court that there was enough evidence for a conviction, accepted one year of probation, and was ordered into alcohol education and treatment.
Drunk driving is not a victimless crime. Each year in Massachusetts, impaired driving takes lives, devastates families, and endangers communities. To have a lawmaker — one who helps write the rules the rest of us live by — arrested under these circumstances and then return to Beacon Hill as if nothing happened sends the wrong message. It tells the public that accountability is optional for those in power.
We believe Rep. John Lawn cannot continue to serve effectively while on probation for drunk driving. His actions have already damaged the integrity of the legislature, and his refusal to step down only deepens the divide between elected officials and the people they represent.
The people of Massachusetts deserve leaders who model responsibility, not recklessness. Rep. Lawn must resign from his seat immediately so that his constituents can elect someone who will uphold the standards of public service and restore trust in government.
Sign if you agree: it is time for accountability. John Lawn should resign.
