Just weeks before Thanksgiving, Walgreens—under its new private equity owners, Sycamore Partners—announced that its hourly retail workers will no longer receive any paid holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

That means the very people who stock the shelves, fill your prescriptions, and keep stores running during a cost-of-living crisis are being told their holidays don’t matter.

This decision affects over 220,000 workers nationwide. That’s more than a million lost paid holidays—sacrificed so a multibillion-dollar firm can trim costs and boost profits after an $18.8 billion takeover.

It's not just cruel—it’s a warning sign.

Sycamore Partners has a long history of squeezing companies for cash while cutting jobs, shuttering stores, and stripping worker protections. When they took over Staples, they closed nearly a third of its stores while extracting a $1 billion payout for themselves. Now they’re starting the same playbook at Walgreens—only this time, workers are paying for it with their paychecks and their family time.

We, the undersigned, demand that Walgreens and Sycamore Partners immediately reinstate paid holidays for all hourly retail employees.

These frontline workers deserve to be treated with dignity, not discarded as a cost-saving line item.

Paid holidays aren’t luxuries—they’re a basic part of what keeps working families afloat and communities healthy. The people who make Walgreens work every day should not be punished for a private equity firm’s profit plan.

No worker should lose Thanksgiving for someone else’s bonus.
