Demand voting on Brownsville recycling fee

The Issue

In Brownsville, I, along with countless neighbors, recently encountered an unexpected charge on our utility bills—a new fee purportedly for recycling bins. This charge appeared without warning, discussion, or democratic process. A company seems to have unilaterally decided to implement this cost upon us, without seeking the consent of the very people expected to pay it.

Such unilateral decisions undermine the principles of democracy and community involvement that Brownsville stands for. Residents deserve a voice in any changes that directly affect their daily lives and expenses. Charging us additional fees without a vote not only disregards our fundamental rights as citizens, but it also raises concerns about transparency and accountability.

Across the nation, communities similar to ours have established successful recycling programs without imposing arbitrary fees. By involving residents in a structured voting process, they ensure both community support and a program that reflects the town's unique needs and values.

Therefore, we urge the Brownsville Council to halt the implementation of this fee and facilitate a community vote on the matter. We call for a transparent discussion where residents can voice their opinions and participate in deciding on the best approach for our town.

Sign this petition to demand transparency, accountability, and the right to have a say in decisions that impact us all. Let’s ensure that any new fees reflect our town’s collective agreement rather than the interests of a single entity. Together, let's voice our demand for our right to vote on changes affecting our utilities and stand for the principles of democracy and community involvement in Brownsville. Please sign and share this petition with others who believe in our cause.
