Petition to Demand Urgent Changes to the Farronshoneen Roundabout for Public Safety.
To:
• Michael Murphy, Head of Active Travel, Waterford City & County Council
• Sean McKeown, CEO, Waterford City & County Council
• Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Transport
Background & Purpose of This Petition
The redesign of the Farronshoneen Roundabout under the Active Travel initiative has led to increased traffic congestion and safety concerns for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Despite these concerns being raised repeatedly by local residents and elected councillors, no action has been taken to address the dangers posed by the new layout.
Since its implementation, the new design has seen a series of accidents, including severe collisions and near-misses. The lack of clear road markings, poorly positioned pedestrian crossings, and changes to traffic flow have confused road users, particularly those unfamiliar with the area. This has not only made the roundabout dangerous but has also caused gridlock and increased commute times for thousands of people on the city’s east side.
This issue has been raised at multiple council meetings, demanding a reassessment of the design. Local residents were never consulted on these changes, and those who live near the roundabout now may face daily safety risks and there has been numerous reports of accidents.
We acknowledge that Active Travel projects can have benefits, but they must be safe and practical for all road users. In this case, the new layout has in our opinion compromised safety of some road users rather than improved it.
Our Demands
We, the elected Waterford City East Councillors - Adam Wyse, Mary Roche, Declan Barry, David Daniels, Jim Darcy, Pat Fitzgerald and the undersigned residents and road users of Waterford, call on:
1. Michael Murphy, Head of Active Travel, to immediately review the design of the Farronshoneen Roundabout and implement urgent safety modifications.
2. Sean McKeown, CEO of Waterford City & County Council, to conduct an independent safety audit of the roundabout and publish the findings.
3. Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Transport, to review the excessive decision-making powers given to Active Travel engineers, ensuring that local councillors and the public have greater influence over road safety decisions.
The people of Waterford will not accept being ignored while their safety is put at risk. The current roundabout design in our opinion has failed, and it must be changed before a serious injury or fatality occurs.
By signing this petition, you are sending a clear message to Waterford City & County Council and the Minister for Transport that we will not tolerate our opinions and voices being ignored.
Sign below to support the call for urgent action.
