Demand UMass Boston Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco resign

The Issue

The University of Massachusetts Boston community has faced a significant crisis that has left students feeling abandoned and unheard. On February 9th, 2026, a burst pipe in the East Hall dorms resulted in severe flooding, forcing the Boston Fire Department to close the building due to critical damage to the fire sprinkler systems. As a result, over 750 students, primarily freshmen, found themselves displaced from their dorm rooms, scrambling for temporary accommodations, and sometimes bearing the financial burden themselves or with the help from their families.

A situation of this magnitude requires decisive leadership and transparent communication to assure the community that matters are under control. However, since this unfortunate event, Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco has remained inexplicably silent. The absence of any public statement or reassurance has left students and worried families and friends wondering about the steps being taken to address the aftermath.

Dependable leadership is crucial in times of crisis. It is the failure in leadership that has exacerbated this situation and caused unnecessary worrying. As of this writing, students are also still having to foot the bill for rent despite not being able to occupy their dorm rooms.

Chancellor Suárez-Orozco’s silence speaks volumes, and it is evident that his inability to communicate effectively with the community has led to further distress and disillusionment.

We believe that the role of a Chancellor is to be present, proactive, and transparent, especially during critical emergencies. By neglecting these responsibilities, Chancellor Suárez-Orozco has failed to uphold the trust and confidence of UMass Boston's community. Consequently, we demand his immediate resignation from his position as Chancellor.

Please sign this petition to urge Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco to step down from his position and for UMass Boston to seek effective leadership that actively supports its community.
