The Issue

In honour of Gary Thomas Hennessey Sr., we call for transparency in the investigative processes of medical practitioners within Newfoundland and Labrador. Gary, like many others, deserves justice, and the community deserves to know the truth about the professional conduct of the healthcare practitioners we trust with our lives.

Current protocols surrounding investigations into medical malpractice or ethical breaches by doctors are shrouded in confidentiality, leaving patients and families in the dark. This lack of transparency not only erodes trust in the healthcare system but also potentially leaves harmful practices unchecked, risking further harm to unsuspecting patients. A transparent review process is essential to uphold the integrity of our healthcare system and ensure accountability.

In 2019, Canada faced 1,709 medical malpractice claims, a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges within our healthcare systems. Given the profound impact that healthcare professionals' conduct can have on individuals and families, a clear and accessible system for public reporting on completed investigations is critical.

We propose that the province adopt measures to ensure that findings from medical investigations are made available to the public, while still respecting the privacy of individual patients involved. This balance of transparency and privacy is not only crucial for justice but also helps rebuild and maintain trust between the public and healthcare providers.

By signing this petition, you urge the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to amend current regulations and commit to fulfilling its duty to protect and inform its citizens. Demand the transparency we all deserve. Sign this petition today and help us advocate for a safer, more accountable healthcare system in memory of Gary Thomas Hennessey Sr., and for the protection of all residents within Newfoundland and Labrador.
