The Issue

To Whom It May Concern,

The CMTBC (College of Massage Therapists of BC) amalgamated with other health professions to form the CCHPBC in June of 2024. Since this amalgamation, we have seen our registration fees raise by over 30%.

The College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC) regulates over 10,000 health professionals, with more than 7,000 of those being RMTs, (the largest group within the College). Despite this, RMTs are facing disproportionate fee increases of 18.7% this year, and 15.7% next year (a 34% increase in just two years!)

At $1,000 per registrant, this represents approximately $7 million in revenue from RMTs alone, (and add another $7 million from the other professions within the college.) That puts their "income" (as a non-profit) at ~14.7 million, with a "proposed budget" of ~7 million.... so where is the additional 7M going?

As a collective of RMTs and the public that we serve, we are demanding transparency from the CCHPBC as to where every dollar they are earning in this fee hike is going. We are also wanting to negotiate the fee hike in general, as it continues to go up by ~$100 each year, for no justified reason. How is it we were paying $650 for registration fees in 2022, to $1,080 in 2027, with NO change in our practice? How much more are they planning to increase fees, that we are just meant to accept?

The College's sole purpose is to protect to public. Raising registration fees for practitioners so exponentially, financially bars entry to quite a few practitioners, which could have a large impact on the well-being of the public they serve (especially in under-served communities). It could also lead to RMTs raising their rates, barring accessible service to members of the public that the CCHPBC is under obligation to protect.

The fee increase is concerning due the lack of justification, reasoning, and transparency-- but above all, it has the potential to be detrimental to the communities that we serve: by making services more expensive to the public, or reducing the amount of practitioners who are able to afford the title that they have worked hard for.

It's imperative that we come together to ensure that the voices of Registered Massage Therapists are heard and that sustainable, fair practices are maintained within our profession. Please sign this petition to demand accountability and fairness from the CCHPBC.
