As a transgender kid who felt alone and wrong throughout elementary and middle school, I only came out during the summer after 8th grade as I had enough and I went through extreme mental health issues. I still do today, but it has become better because I feel more valued, accepted, and not alone.

The journey of self-acceptance and feeling valued by society is daunting, especially when you don't see yourself represented in the world around you. Every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the media they consume, yet for transgender kids, this often isn't the case.

Transgender representation in children's media isn't just about diversity; it's about reflection, validation, and hope for countless young children who need to see their stories and experiences acknowledged and celebrated. When children see themselves in a story, it inspires confidence and self-worth, essential foundations for a healthy, happy life. 

These young individuals deserve to feel seen and heard. Representation can foster empathy, reduce bullying, and promote understanding among their peers. It can also tell the trans kids that they are not alone and that it is not good to repress their feelings and mental health to fit in.

This world is full of hate already, and not representing trans kids makes them feel more less. Trans kids need to be understood, heard, seen, and remembered.

To creators, writers, and producers in the children's media industry: including more transgender characters and stories help the mental health of children and understanding of the transgender experience. Diversifying media content is not only impactful; it's necessary for progress. We must ensure that every child has the opportunity to identify with diverse narratives that encourage authenticity and acceptance.

Kids should never feel alone. Kids should never feel the need to hide their true selves and feelings. Kids should never have to repress and hide.
