Demand the Termination of Officer Nahum Dorme from the Memphis Police Department

The Issue

Memphis Police Officer Nahum Dorme shot and killed 20-year-old Jaylin McKenzie following a routine traffic stop on December 16, 2022. Not only was this an unnecessary loss of life, but it was also marked by multiple violations of department policy.

Officer Dorme did not have his body camera turned on during the incident, which is against department regulations. This lack of recorded evidence has hindered the District Attorney's ability to charge him appropriately. Furthermore, Officer Dorme pursued Jaylin - another breach of protocol - without reporting either the chase or subsequent shooting to his supervisor or dispatch.

In videos of that night that were released to the public, Officer Dorme can be seen and heard playing violent rap music while chasing a car of young Black men whom he had racially profiled. Officer Dorme was texting while driving in traffic without using a siren. He fired his weapon a minimum of 7 times at Jaylin, shooting him in the knee, shattering his leg, and also shooting him directly in the chest. Once Jaylin was down, Officer Dorme failed to render aid.

The absence of adherence to these critical protocols has resulted in a tragic loss and a failure in justice for Jaylin McKenzie.

The Memphis Police Department issued two written reprimands to Officer Dorme, but he is still a member of the department and is still working on the job and receiving his salary and benefits. It is clear that Officer Nahum Dorme's actions are not representative of safe or responsible law enforcement conduct. He is unable to "protect and serve" and is a danger to the Memphis community when he continues to be employed by MPD.

We call upon Memphis Police Department Chief CJ Davis to hold her officers accountable for their actions and ensure that they adhere strictly to established policies designed for everyone's safety. We demand that Officer Nahum Dorme be terminated from his position due to these gross violations.

Please sign this petition if you believe in justice, accountability, and upholding standards within our law enforcement agencies.
