Before Kawhi was traded, the Spurs did a bad job giving him talent necessary to win championships. Now ever since the Kawhi Leonard fiasco, the San Antonio Spurs have refused to better their long term future for the fans. We do not know what it is. We don’t know if it is stubbornness or laziness that is running rampant in our decision making between Popovich and the front office. OUR FANS DESERVE BETTER!!!!!

So let’s do story time first. We finally traded Kawhi after he begged out and all we got was DeRozan, role player Jakob Poeltl and a late pick that yielded us Keldon Johnson. You see all these trades going on now where lesser players than Kawhi are yielding multiple first round picks. What happened Spurs? Why did we get such a weak package? I’m guessing we were stubborn and didn’t want to trade with the lakers or send kawhi where he wanted and are paying for it dearly. 

We are now at a crossing roads. DeMar DeRozan has one year left under contract. If the Spurs do not extend him or trade him, all we will have left from the Kawhi Leonard trade is Keldon Johnson and Jakob Poeltl(who could be gone soon too). That is just simply unacceptable. That can’t be all you have left over from trading a no less than top 7 player in Kawhi Leonard. The spurs must either trade DeMar DeRozan or extend him or we are left with next to nothing for Kawhi. It will go down as arguably the worst trade in NBA history.

Now lets shift to LaMarcus Aldridge. LaMarcus Aldridge’s time in San Antonio has been nothing but a flop. He got onto the scene in San Antonio and quickly started complaining. He didn’t like the system and wanted to leave early on. We talked him down and extended. This was a critical error. LaMarcus Aldridge can play, but he does not fit in this era of basketball and he does not fit our system. To score his points he has to have the ball, try and back down for 20 seconds of the shot clock then forces a tough contested mid range fader (clank!). It kills our offense. The Spurs time in the bubble all but proved the Spurs are fine or even better without Aldridge on the team. It is especially better for the young guys if Aldridge isn’t there. There are also plenty of metrics that prove the Spurs are a better team on both sides of the ball with Aldridge not on the court.

The Spurs need to simply trade LaMarcus Aldridge. It has been a long time coming. We do not care if it does not yield an elite package. He’s not worth a lot, but us Spurs fans are not fools. We know there is a market out there for Aldridge. Plenty of bad NBA players keep getting moved and even bad players on bad contracts. We are not naive enough to believe we cannot move Aldridge and if the problem is we want more than dammit suck it up Spurs. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and take the best you can get.

The Spurs fan base is a loyal, diverse and loving fan base. We love our Spurs, but we are not homers. We have supported this franchise for so long and we deserve better effort. Yes we have been spoiled with 5 rings, but that does not mean we just sail off into the sunset and not build something new. We need a real future and right now we do not have any resemblance of that with final ultimatums on DeRozan and Aldridge coming soon. We must extend DeMar Derozan or trade him, and without a doubt trade LaMarcus Aldridge. Do what is best for the future of the team and the fans. That means taking the best trade packages we can get and not being stubborn...We have a decision to make now. Build a sustainable future, or we will take the steps into a thousand years of darkness similar to the New York Knicks. Do what is right San Antonio (Peter Holt, RC Buford, Gregg Popovich)!!!!!!!!!
