The cancellation of local elections by Angela Rayner is a critical affront to democracy, reducing the citizens' power to choose their local governmental heads. This action by the Labour government interferes with the democratic rights of our British public, who should be rightfully allowed to express their decision via voting. It is crucial to remind that local government plays a foundational role in the democratic system, acting as the closest tier of government to the people. As reported by the Electoral Commission UK, over 5,000 seats were due for election in England, Scotland, and Wales in 2020 – all were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic (source: Electoral Commission UK). However, the democratic process must continue, despite the challenges we face. Therefore, we must call upon the Labour government to reconsider this decision and reinstate the local elections swiftly, ensuring the democratic exercise is honoured in the spirit of fairness and freedom.
