The Issue

Many of us in Fort Saskatchewan, AB have been shocked and appalled by our mayor's recent statement that openly advocates for harming stray cats in an illegal manner. This issue runs deep for many of us - this is not acceptable conduct for a public representative of our community. In fact, it is a direct contradiction of the values we stand for.

It is important to note that under the Alberta Animal Protection Act, causing an animal distress, which includes inflicting harm, is considered illegal [1]. We find it deplorable that our mayor is actively promoting practices which violate the law. Using his public platform in such a manner is not only unethical, but it further exacerbates the problem of stray cats in the community, rather than finding humane and effective solutions.

Statistics indicate that stray cats are a common issue across cities in Canada, with an estimated 600,000 cats homeless in Ontario alone [2]. Adequate solutions to manage the stray population exist, such as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, which have been successful in reducing stray populations in New York City by as much as 32% [3].

The mayor's wrongful statements not only reinforce harmful practices, but she also grossly underrepresents and neglects her duty to cater to and educate the public about the humane treatment of animals.

For the sake of dignity, our community values, and to stand against animal cruelty, we call for the mayor of Fort Saskatchewan to step down. Join us in making this demand for better, compassionate leadership. Please lend your voice to this cause by signing this petition.
