Demand the Reopening of Dressing Rooms at Value Village in St. John's 161 Kenmount Road

The Issue

Long after the restrictions imposed due to the Covid pandemic were lifted, designing an empowered consumer experience took a step backward. Value Village thrift store on 161 Kenmount Road, St. John's, NL, Canada, once appreciated for its amenable facilities, chose to remove a vital retail element entirely from their store - the dressing rooms. To sell clothing and not offer a changing room is not only a poor business practice but also breaches the rights and privacy of customers who would like to try before they buy.

I've personally experienced and witnessed other customers in the uncompromising situations of trying on clothing over their own clothing and we demand that:

  1. -Persons with disabilities who are visually impaired, use wheelchairs, canes, walkers, or crutches should have complete access to a clear and spacious dressing room.
  2. -Parents with children trying on clothing has the right to private dressing rooms.
  3. -Having a 14 day policy return is not sufficient because you can only exchange your item for something else . Not everyone rides a vehicle or live close enough to have the option of returns. And because of this exchange policy, not everyone will have the time to look for another article of clothing. Customers who live out-of-town or rely on metrobus services in the city is not always conducive to the return policy.
  4. -We see this as another 'cash grab' because Value Village owners know the likelihood of no returns are high.

With the recent surge in inflation, more members of our population are resorting to thrift stores like Value Village. Thrift stores function as a viable means for cost-effective shopping, and without changing rooms, we disadvantage the same people we aim to assist.

The removal of changing rooms not only takes away the shopping rights of the customers but also dismisses the essential need for privacy and the right to try on clothes for comfort, fit, and personal suitability. It is an unquestionably essential to have private fitting rooms in a store selling clothing.

We, therefore, urge the Value Village authorities to respect the rights of its customers and demand the re-opening of the dressing rooms. The action of reopening the dressing rooms would signify the store's commitment to align consumer services with societal needs - a stand we must insist on. Please sign this petition and support the cause for reviving the human right to privacy in every place concerning personal choice, including Value Village.
