Demand the removal of the ALPRs in Lake Zurich, IL
The Issue
In Lake Zurich, Illinois, we are facing an unsettling and intrusive reality – the installation of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs). These surveillance devices, which indiscriminately capture and store our license plate data, represent a violation of our Fourth Amendment rights. My family and I, like many others in our community, believe these cameras operate as a form of mass surveillance, infringing upon our right to privacy and the protection from unreasonable searches and seizures.
The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution is fundamental to our rights as citizens, ensuring that we are free from unwarranted intrusions by the government. The ALPRs, however, operate at all hours, recording the movements of innocent people as we go about our daily lives. This broad, unchecked mass surveillance system raises serious concerns about how our personal data is stored, accessed, and protected. Who is watching us and why are we not informed about our data's usage and the duration for which it is retained?
Moreover, studies have shown that mass surveillance often does little to deter serious criminal activity but instead can lead to misuse and abuse of power. The potential for data breaches and the targeting of innocent individuals further heightens the risk that these devices pose to our community.
We propose the removal of the ALPRs in Lake Zurich as a first step towards ensuring that our community's rights are protected. Instead of relying on mass surveillance, we advocate for the allocation of resources towards proven, community-based policing strategies that engage the community in proactive and transparent dialogue.
By joining together to demand the removal of these ALPRs we send a clear message to our local government: our privacy cannot be compromised under the guise of security. It is time to prioritize the constitutional rights and freedoms that make our communities trustful and secure while adopting policies that respect our privacy.
Please sign this petition to stand with us in protecting our right to privacy and to urge our local officials in Lake Zurich to prioritize the rights of the individual over unwarranted surveillance.
