Demand the Removal of SRO Building at 2500 S. Throop St., Chicago

The Issue

In our family-oriented neighborhood, harmoniously situated amongst homes and daycare centers, an unwanted element has been introduced. The SRO building at 2500 S. Throop St., home to a population of registered sex offenders, presents a disturbing reality for us.

As a resident of this place we proudly call home, I, along with many others, am deeply concerned about the safety of our children and the quality of life in our community. We understand the challenges faced in managing the rehabilitation of sex offenders. However, positioning such a facility in close proximity to vulnerable populations such as our children is an alarming oversight.

Moreover, statistics indicate sex offenders have a relatively high recidivism rate. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, nearly three-quarters (73%) of sex offenders were arrested for a new crime within five years of release from prison. Placing a building full of such individuals within our community—much less near two day-care centers—is alarming and raises serious concerns.

We are not against rehabilitation or reintegration, but safety should be our paramount concern. We must not risk the safety of our children and community. We urge the authorities to reconsider the location of this SRO building, to ensure it is not near schools, daycare centers, or family residential areas. As responsible citizens who believe in the right to safety, we should not have to live in fear.

We, therefore, call on the relevant authorities to urgently reassess the situation. In the interest of our children, our families, and our community, let us move this SRO building to an appropriate location.

We respectfully ask for your understanding and compassion in this matter. Please sign this petition and help us secure a safer environment for our families.
