Demand the Removal of Red Light Cameras from Intersections

The Issue

I have witnessed how a small mistiming at an intersection can lead to expensive tickets, even when no harm was caused. This is not a story exclusive to me, but a common circumstance that affects many drivers daily. Red light cameras posted at intersections are increasingly becoming a burden rather than a tool for public safety.

The evidence supports this: a report from the Chicago Tribune, after analyzing 4 million tickets, found no significant safety benefit from the installation of these cameras (Chicago Tribune, 2014). These cameras are designed to capture vehicles that run a red light. Still, in many scenarios, these infractions occur merely because the yellow light was too short, or the driver mistimed their approach, not due to reckless or unsafe driving.

In 2016, in Chicago alone, drivers paid out $158.1 million in red light camera fines (Chicago Tribune, 2016). This is an astronomical figure, reflecting not the transgressions of drivers, but the flawed traffic system we're trapped in. This system needs to change.

The sweeping implementation of red light cameras is a contentious issue, resulting more in revenue generation than enhanced safety. By signing this petition, we can convey the unjust drawbacks of this system that serves to penalize the unsuspecting motorist rather than promote traffic obedience. Our roads should be safe, but they should also be just. Please, sign this petition. Let's advocate for a better, more fair traffic system and demand the removal of red light cameras from intersections.
