Demand the Removal of Nongfu Spring to Protect Nashua’s Water Supply

Demand the Removal of Nongfu Spring to Protect Nashua’s Water Supply
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Nashua, New Hampshire, urgently demand the removal of Nongfu Spring, a foreign beverage company, from its recently purchased 23-acre property at 80 Northwest Blvd. This site, located near the Pennichuck water system and Merrimack River, threatens our drinking water, which serves over 90,000 residents and 600,000 downstream. Our water already faces PFAS contamination (16 ppt, above CDC guidelines), linked to cancer and health risks, particularly in environmental justice communities like East Hollis.
Nongfu Spring, founded in 1996 in China, dominates the bottled water market and is expanding globally, acquiring water sources in New Zealand and now Nashua. Driven by China’s severe water crisis—where groundwater drops a meter yearly and cities face acute shortages—the company seeks to exploit our abundant resources. In China, businesses like Nongfu Spring operate under strict government oversight, including compliance with environmental and operational regulations, often through embedded Party committees. As a foreign entity, Nongfu Spring faces limited local accountability in Nashua, making it nearly impossible to enforce strict environmental standards to protect our water.
The secretive $67 million purchase—four times the property’s value—raises concerns about transparency and intent, especially given its proximity to critical infrastructure like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and defense contractors like BAE Systems and TEN TECH AERO. Without robust oversight, Nongfu Spring’s factory could worsen PFAS pollution, endangering our health, economy, and local control. Nashua’s history of sewage spills and the 2022 East Hollis asphalt plant victory show we can protect our community when we act together.
We call on the Governor Kelly Ayotte, Speaker of the House Sherman Packard, Senate President Jeb Bradley, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, U.S. House of Representatives Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander, New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Chair Daniel C. Goldner and New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs (BEA) Commissioner Taylor Caswell to:
- Hold public hearings to ensure transparency and community input in all foreign purchases.
- Revoke any permits allowing Nongfu Spring’s operations at 80 Northwest Blvd.
- Total removal of Nongfu Springs and Daniel Webster College owners from our community
By signing below, we demand the immediate removal of Nongfu Spring to safeguard Nashua’s water supply for current and future generations. Together, we can keep our water safe!
