Demand the Removal of Johnny Mercer (CON) for Ignoring Veterans' Concerns
The Issue
As a dedicated citizen and advocate for the rights of veterans, I am profoundly concerned by the repeated shortcomings of Johnny Mercer, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, in addressing the urgent challenges faced by our courageous servicemen and women. It is with great disappointment that I urge my fellow citizens to rally behind this petition, demanding his immediate removal from office.
Personal Account:
My personal encounter with Johnny Mercer has left me disheartened and filled with frustration. Despite reaching out to him through social media platforms and official channels, sharing my own story, experiences, and the crucial concerns affecting other veterans, my pleas were met with silence. His official response, when it finally came, was marked by a deliberate attempt to deny and deflect, or worse, ignore the indisputable evidence presented before him.
Not only did he fail to acknowledge my issues and concerns, but he even went so far as to block me on Twitter. Regrettably, this act of stonewalling is not an isolated incident; it has become apparent that many other veterans who have raised their voices have faced similar dismissals and blockades. Personally, I was left physically disabled without the necessary rehabilitation support or a medical discharge following an injury sustained during deployment in 2012. Despite diligently following the official channels and processes, I discovered that the system was intentionally drawn out, seemingly hoping I would give up or that the evidence would fade away.
Furthermore, there was no ombudsman available to address service complaints of this nature, as they are considered special cases and fall outside the purview of existing ombudsman offices. I was informed that the Ministry of Defence prefers to redirect such cases to a Special To Type (STT) Service Complaint, the majority of which handle medical complaints.
While I agree that the service did not directly cause my injury, the absence of a mandated referral for medical discharge, as stipulated in BR1991, placed me and countless others in a grey area. Moreover, there is currently no tri-service retrospective medical discharge process, leaving us with dead ends at every turn.
In a freedom of information request over a year ago, the following data emerged (summarized):
157,295 individuals left the armed forces in the past decade.
Among them, 20,970 received a medical discharge.
10,915 did not receive a medical discharge despite having "major injuries."
Within this group, 3,205 were in their final year of service.
Even in the face of overwhelming evidence, Johnny Mercer chose to remain idle and repeatedly refused to meet with me. However, this issue extends beyond my personal experience. Through my journey, I have uncovered a distressing truth about the treatment of those leaving the service, with tens of thousands subjected to deplorable conditions by the Ministry of Defence, Veterans UK, and this government.
There is an alarming lack of accountability for his actions or inactions. Despite receiving poor ratings in veteran surveys, both he and the Office for Veterans' Affairs (OVA) deny the existence of these issues and persist in ignoring veterans with genuine concerns. A veterans minister should prioritize engaging with veterans and addressing the challenges at hand. The OVA should operate under veteran leadership, independent from the government, to ensure transparency and accountability. It is evident that certain veterans are exploited for positive public relations, while the deep-rooted issues faced by others are shamefully disregarded. Johnny Mercer and his office, for which he bears responsibility, have failed not only me but also countless other veterans whom I have connected with over the past decade.
It is high time he is dismissed from his role as veterans minister, once and for all!
