Demand the NMC Investigate Nurse Sandie Peggie for Racist and Transphobic Conduct.
The Issue
We are calling on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to launch a full and transparent Fitness to Practise investigation into registered nurse Sandie Peggie following a host of serious, publicly reported allegations, including racist and transphobic behaviour.
Ms. Peggie has been the subject of significant public attention regarding her employment dispute with NHS Fife. The proceedings not only highlighted concerns regarding her conduct towards a transgender doctor—where a senior nurse reportedly described Ms. Peggie as 'intolerant' of trans people—but also brought forth explicit evidence of racist conduct.
Specific Allegations of Racist Conduct:
Ms. Peggie admitted sending "offensive" jokes about the deaths of Pakistani people in floods and also joked that there were "too many P***'s" in Britain.
She further admitted using the racial slurs "P*"** and "Ch*"**.
The tribunal found her claim that she sent these messages as "dark humour" to be an "untruthful attempt to downplay what she had done".
Allegations of Transphobic Conduct:
It was reported that Ms. Peggie referred to a transgender doctor as “it” and a “weirdo,” and a senior nurse reportedly said she was 'intolerant' of trans people.
The NMC’s primary role is to protect the public, and its Code of Conduct requires all nurses to:
"Act with honesty and integrity at all times, treating people fairly and without discrimination, bullying or harassment."
"Provide and promote non-discriminatory, person-centred and sensitive care at all times."
The actions admitted by Ms. Peggie directly violate these fundamental standards. Such conduct causes immense offence, undermines the confidence of minority ethnic and LGBTQ+ patients and colleagues, and severely compromises a nurse's professional integrity.
We demand that the NMC formally open a Fitness to Practise investigation to thoroughly examine all these publicly reported allegations of professional misconduct. The NMC must demonstrate that explicit racism and discriminatory behaviour have no place in the nursing profession.
