Demand the Minneapolis City Council to Restrict Cannabis Sales to Minors.

Demand the Minneapolis City Council to Restrict Cannabis Sales to Minors.
The Issue
When I think of my homeland, Somalia, memories flood back of fleeing the terrible civil war that took away our homes and childhoods. The sounds of gunfire are etched in my memory. I sought safety in Minneapolis, only to face a different challenge: the issue of substance abuse affecting our young people. Recently, the Minnesota State Legislature decided to legalize cannabis. While some celebrate this, it raises concerns for those of us who care deeply about the well-being of our youth.
It is essential to clarify that we are not against medical cannabis; instead, we are worried about the potential for misuse, especially among young people. That is why we are asking the Minneapolis City Council to take action. We believe they should put in place stricter rules about where cannabis can be sold. They can create safe zones to keep cannabis shops away from schools, daycares, and parks where children play. It’s also important to limit the number of cannabis stores in our neighborhoods to make sure it is not too easy for kids to access marijuana.
We encourage a public education campaign to inform everyone about the risks and responsible use of cannabis and to partner with local law enforcement to enforce these new rules. Research shows that using cannabis at a young age can have harmful effects on brain development. This is not just about preventing a problem; it is about creating a safe and healthy environment for our children and the future of our community.
However, given the current landscape of Minnesota politics, where the State Legislature is evenly split at 67 seats each, we recognize that meaningful change may also require action at the state level. We urge our state representatives to consider stricter statewide regulations on cannabis sales, education, and enforcement to protect our youth. Working together at city and state levels can create a safer, healthier environment for our children to thrive.
We urge parents, especially mothers who understand the pain of losing a child to substance issues, to voice their support for action from the City Council. We cannot let substance abuse take away our children's futures. For our community and our shared future, please sign this petition. Join us in making a real difference together.
