The Issue

My brother became the target of Officer Scaffo #648's overwhelming aggression. In the midst of a foot chase, this officer used excessive force and directed a disturbing threat at my brother, Briashon Brown a black man. At a vulnerable moment, Officer Scaffo held a gun to my brother's head and explicitly threatened, "I will shoot him in the head motherfucker." This display of unlawful behavior is not only unacceptable but poses a grave threat to the community's safety and trust in law enforcement.

Officer Scaffo's actions are a clear violation of the ethical codes and standards expected of our police force. His behavior not only jeopardized the life of an unarmed and vulnerable individual but also underscores a broader issue of misconduct within our Salem County police services. Statistics support that excessive force is disproportionately used against black individuals. According to the Washington Post, black Americans are killed at more than twice the rate of white Americans by police.

The responsibilities of law enforcement officers include serving and protecting all members of the community with fairness and without bias. Officer Scaffo's actions have not only failed this mandate but have also endangered lives and sullied the reputation of the police department. Allowing such behavior to go unchecked risks setting a dangerous precedent and eroding public trust.

The firing of Officer Scaffo #648 is a necessary step toward ensuring accountability within our police force. It serves as a message that abusive and racially charged behavior has no place in our society. By standing together, we can demand that our police officers are held to the highest standards of conduct and that justice is served.

I urge you to sign this petition to call for the immediate termination of Officer Scaffo #648. Together, we can work towards a safer community for everyone.
