The Issue

We all know a dog isn't just a pet, it's a member of the family. For us, it is our husky Momo — an energetic ball of fur that soon, can no longer run free in her favourite place. The Barrie Dog Off Leash Recreation Area is her haven, along with 1,000’s of other local pups. But the city’s approval of the YMCA building project is leading to its closure.

Barrie is a vibrant and rapidly growing city. As of 2021, it is estimated that there are approximately 42,000 dogs in the area. But with the loss of the Off Leash Recreation Area, there is a significant shortage of open spaces for them. This should be a priority for the city government, for dogs’ welfare and for the happiness of their owners, as well as the broader community.

A city park is more than just a piece of land; it is a vital part of the community fabric - a place for leisure, exercise, and socialization. Dogs, like humans, need spaces to be active, route routines and socialize with others. That's why we're calling for the city to establish a new dog park to replace the one we are loosing.

By signing this petition, you're not just supporting a new dog park, you're supporting community, happiness, health and our beloved dogs' right to play. Your support can lead to action from our city officials. Let's make sure that every pup in Barrie has a place to run, play, and feel free. Please, sign this petition today.
