Demand the Associated Press Retract the Award for Controversial Photograph of Shani Louk

The Issue

We call on the Associated Press (AP) and the Pictures of the Year International (POY) competition to retract the award granted to the photograph depicting the brutal display of Shani Louk’s body by Hamas militants. This image, captured by AP freelance photojournalist Ali Mahmud, and awarded as part of the “Team Picture Story of the Year,” has caused profound distress and outrage. It is imperative to hold media organizations accountable for the ethical implications of the content they promote and celebrate.

On October 7, 2023, the world was shocked by images of unspeakable violence and terror following the Hamas-led attacks in Israel. Among these was a harrowing photograph of Shani Louk, a young woman brutally murdered and paraded by militants. This award, granted in partnership with the Associated Press (AP), has sparked significant controversy and public backlash.

Many have raised serious ethical concerns regarding the decision to recognize and honor this photograph, arguing that: It glorifies an act of terrorism by amplifying the propaganda of those who committed the atrocity. It disrespects the dignity and memory of Shani Louk, reducing her identity to a shocking image for public consumption. It sends a dangerous precedent that images depicting inhumane treatment of victims can be celebrated under the guise of “photojournalistic excellence.” This is not an issue of censorship, it is an issue of journalistic responsibility and human decency.

While documenting conflict is an essential part of journalism, there must be a line when the imagery contributes to revictimization and desensitization to cruelty. We, the undersigned, urge the Associated Press and the Pictures of the Year International competition to: Retract the award associated with the photograph of Shani Louk. Issue a public statement acknowledging the pain caused by the decision to honor this image. Reassess and revise ethical standards for awarding and disseminating graphic content related to terrorism and victim abuse.

We stand in solidarity with survivors of terror, and those calling for compassion and accountability in journalism. No victim should ever be used for acclaim.
