Demand That Wyoming Dismantle The Last Gas Chamber (The Only One Left In The USA)

The Issue

Dogs in Wyoming are suffering immensely, being put to sleep in gas chambers after enduring rough lives. When the chamber fills with gas, the animals inside gasp for breath, feel a searing pain in their lungs, and often claw at the chamber door or throw themselves against the sides, desperately trying to escape. These animals deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion in their final moments. Wyoming must do the right thing and shut down the last remaining gas chambers in the USA.    And The Humane Society Of The United States offered you a grant for you to dismantle your gas chamber...AND YOU REFUSED!! I wonder how you sleep at night...
Recent campaigns and efforts in 2025 have brought to light the ongoing use of gas chambers in Wyoming animal shelters, specifically the Green River Animal Control and Evanston Animal Shelter. Despite national trends towards more humane methods of euthanasia, like euthanasia by injection, these facilities continue a practice that is widely recognized as causing distress and prolonged suffering for the animals involved.

Numerous studies and expert opinions emphasize the physical and psychological pain animals experience in gas chambers. Unlike euthanasia by injection, which is timely and more peaceful, gas chambers are known to cause panic and prolonged deaths. This is an inhumane practice and is increasingly falling out of use across the country. California, who was one of the first states to end the practice, has shown that transitioning to euthanasia by injection is not only feasible but significantly improves the welfare of animals in shelters.

Wyoming has an opportunity to join the majority of the nation in adopting more compassionate practices. Transitioning to euthanasia by injection will not only improve the welfare of animals but also refocus the state’s animal control efforts on finding homes for these animals instead of ending their lives with outdated practices.

It's time to implement policies that reflect our cumulative compassion towards animals, particularly those who have already experienced hardship prior to reaching shelters. Shutting down gas chambers in Wyoming shelters will send a strong message about the state's commitment to humane treatment of animals.

There are practical steps that can be taken to end this outdated practice. Wyoming’s lawmakers and animal control authorities need to allocate resources and retrain staff to implement more humane methods. Funding and support from national animal welfare organizations leverage these efforts, ensuring a smooth transition.

By supporting this petition, you're speaking up for a humane future for Wyoming’s animals. Join us in urging Wyoming's authorities to transition away from gas chamber euthanasia, ensuring a kinder, gentler end for these innocent creatures. Sign the petition today to help end unnecessary suffering.

The Decision Makers

Responded
Thank you for sharing this petition and for raising awareness about the use of gas chambers for animal euthanasia. I want to acknowledge the concern and provide some clarity on how decisions like this are made in Wyoming. While I can certainly look at what our statutes say, this issue is ultimately a matter of local control. In Wyoming, it is up to each municipality — such as city or town councils — to decide whether or not to allow the use of gas chambers in their animal shelters. In the case of Green River, where I represent, this would be a decision for the city or town leadership. I also want to note that areas like Rock Springs ceased this practice in 2020, which shows that change is possible. I will be doing outreach soon to their administrators to understand more and gather information on how that process occurred. That said, I am open to seeing how I might be able to help. I was under the impression that more counties and municipalities in Wyoming have been moving toward the no-kill model, and I’d like to explore what support or encouragement could be given at the state level to reinforce that shift. Please know that I value hearing from constituents on this issue, and I appreciate the passion you’ve shown through this petition. Respectfully, Rep.
