The long, horrific treatment of the Chagos Islanders must end. Successive British governments have traumatised generations of Chagossians since the de-population of the Chagos archipelago began in 1965. Today they are still prevented from returning to their homeland because of the blood-soaked "special relationship" between the US & UK governments that maintains the US naval base at Diego Garcia.

The 'British Overseas Territories Act 2002' won some Chagossians their British Citizenship but the government's corrupt language and caveats left the Chagossian community in turmoil:

- the Act privileges marriage (which was uncommon amongst Chagossians) - children born in exile to an unmarried Chagossian man and a non-Chagossian woman are not British citizens

- children of Chagossian parents born off the islands (because of the need for a hospital) before 26 April 1969 (a date chosen arbitrarily by the Foreign Office) are not British citizens

- the children of Chagossians born in exile (who are British citizens) ARE NOT British citizens

- Chagossians who have married non-Chagossians (since being forced into exile) - their spouses are not British citizens

Because of these complexities, many Chagossians are struggling to gain their British Citizenship whilst living in the UK with family who - because of these complexities - ARE classed as British citizens.

Given all of this, is it acceptable for Chagossians who are living in the UK, working, supporting their community, studying, and FIGHTING FOR RETURN TO THEIR HOMELAND, to be detained by the UK Home Office, separated from their family and friends, and threatened with deportation (AGAIN!)? Is this acceptable?

Please share this petition and please encourage friends and family to sign it.
If you can, please raise awareness about this situation in your community.
And it might be worth writing to your MP - there are cross-party alliances on this issue.

If you can afford to, please donate towards this fund to help Chagossians with the lengthy legal process involved when threatened with detention and deportation.

Thank you so much from the Chagos Refugees Group UK.
