The Issue

Imagine sending your child to elementary school, only to hear reports of ICE vehicles and agents present near their playground. This troubling occurrence happened near my home in a suburb of Portland, Oregon, a city that has become a flashpoint for confrontations between National Guard troops and peaceful protesters. These troops faced off against people advocating for human rights, seemingly without justification.

Beyond Portland, there’s a growing nationwide outcry over the President's mass deportation policy. Reports have surfaced of detainees being held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Clergy members engaged in prayer have been shot with pepper balls, and tear gas has indiscriminately been used against peaceful gatherings. These actions violate the Bill of Rights, defy the principles of humane treatment and present a moral question to our nation.

The policy's broad and often indiscriminate enforcement has ripple effects, tearing families apart and instilling fear in communities. The lack of transparency and accountability surrounding these actions is a grave concern for all Americans, transcending political affiliations.

We cannot stand by as these actions continue unchecked. It is imperative that the United States Senate conducts public oversight hearings on this deportation policy. The purpose of these hearings should be to investigate the enforcement tactics, assess the human rights implications, and hold accountable those responsible for any unlawful or inhumane practices.

Through these hearings, we have the opportunity to demand transparency and re-evaluate a policy that affects countless lives daily. We need to ensure that immigration enforcement respects human rights and the values upon which the United States was founded.

Please join me in urging the Senate to take immediate action. Let’s call for an in-depth and public examination of these practices. Your voice matters. Please sign this petition to hold public oversight hearings on Trump’s deportation policy and help restore dignity and justice in our immigration system.
