I am a Congolese refugee. If I had not made it out, it could well have been me risking my life and limbs for less than a $1 a day. Imagine losing a child in order to make wealthy corporations richer who can’t even offer labor laws or medical care for injured workers. Capitalizing and taking advantage of impoverished Congolese families. 

Every electrical device we use contains unethically mined coltan (Columbite Tantalite), a precious metal used in phones, tablets, or anything with a rechargeable battery. This includes devices from Apple, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Dell, Microsoft, and Tesla - all which are companies cited in lawsuits over deaths and serious injuries sustained among child laborers.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to 60% of the world's supply of coltan. The mining industry there has been linked to human rights abuses including child labour and environmental damage.

This petition calls on these tech giants to take immediate action against these unethical practices by ensuring that their supply chains are free from human rights abuses and by contributing towards the development of the communities affected by their operations.

It's time we put people before profit. It's time we #FreeCongo from the shackles of unethical mining practices that exploit its people and resources for corporate gain.
