Demand systemic reforms to protect vulnerable seniors

The Issue

I served as a caregiver and advocate for an elderly individual who depended on systems meant to protect him. During that time, I witnessed how easily caregivers can be excluded, how good-faith concerns can be dismissed, and how inaccurate or incomplete records can influence life-altering decisions. When I raised concerns seeking transparency and safety, I faced barriers to information and was silenced instead of supported. That experience revealed serious systemic failures that place older adults at risk and convinced me that no senior deserves to be neglected, erased, or denied dignity.

This is not an isolated experience. Across the country, older adults are harmed by systemic failures within medical, guardianship, and protective systems that are supposed to ensure their safety and well-being. Families and caregivers who raise concerns about neglect, unsafe medical decisions, or lack of transparency are too often excluded, ignored, or retaliated against. Records are frequently inconsistent or inaccurate, oversight is fragmented, and accountability is rare—leaving vulnerable seniors without meaningful protection and stripping families of due process and dignity. This issue matters because without reform, seniors will continue to suffer in silence and caregivers will remain afraid to speak up. Virginia
